Enrollment & Financial Aid

Grants

A grant is defined as an award of money that is given to the student with no repayment required, as long as a student does not withdraw completely during a term. Below are descriptions of the various grants that are available at SMCC.

Federal Pell Grant (PELL):

The Federal Pell Grant is designed to provide financial assistance to undergraduate students. It is considered the foundation of the financial aid awards and may be combined with other forms of aid to help meet the costs of education. The award amounts range from $278 to $5,550 and are based on the number of hours for which the student is enrolled, the cost of education, and the Expected Family Contribution (which is calculated by the Central Processor when the student files the FAFSA and is indicated on the Student Aid Report). A student's file must be complete thirty days prior to the end of the academic year in order to receive payment from Federal Pell Grant before the year ends.

Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG):

The FSEOG is targeted to qualified applicants who have an exceptional remaining financial need after being awarded the Federal Pell. At SMCC awards may range from $600 to $1800 annually.

Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership Program (LEAPP):

This grant combines federal and state money to assist students attending public institutions of higher education. To be eligible, a student must be eligible to pay Arizona resident tuition and have financial need. Awards range from $800 to $1200 per academic year.

Maricopa Grant:

This institutional grant is for students who can demonstrate need.  This fund is automatically packaged for eligible students at SMCC.  Some limited funds are available to students who are not federal student grant eligible for a variety of reasons.  Awards range from $800 - $1200 per year.
